7 Powerful Antiviral Essential Oils + Other Tips That May Help Protect Against the Coronavirus

Black bottol of essential oil on the table for health

As this Covid-19 Coronavirus situation seems to be evolving into a real threat here in the US, it’s important to ramp up the amount of protection we have on a daily basis. In the last 48 hours, many things have changed quite dramatically on a National scale and will continue to do so moving forward. While we hope that this virus will come and go like many infections and threats of the past, it’s best to be prepared and do whatever we can in the meantime. As of 3/11, the WHO has declared this a pandemic. Stores may close down at some point in the near future and many businesses will be shutting down for a while during this plays out. All professional sports leagues have shut down and billions of dollars will be lost, so this is something we certainly need to take seriously, but not panic over.

Although it may be impossible to completely eradicate any chance of contracting Covid-19 (or any infection for that matter), there are several things that can be done that may help decrease the chance of contracting it. Even decreasing the chances of it taking hold by 20-30% can have potential benefits for hundreds of thousands of people. It’s a shame when so many substances and compounds that are perhaps the most powerful weapons available right now aren’t being discussed on national or local news or being told to the public.

Sanitizing all objects, handles, surfaces in your home will go a long way as this virus seems to spread. Most (if not all) pathogens are no match for essential oils when the right strength and oils are used. This has been proven in laboratories and clinics for years. One of the best options for covid-19 may be a combination of essential oils and certain specific supplements for internal use. Right now the medical system has no treatment for this virus, and has had lowsy (at best) success with other viruses and infections in general.

Many strains form protective defenses against drugs and medical treatment. If we can protect the body internally to some degree, as well as lower infectious organisms in our surroundings, the chances of contraction or the progression of coronavirus may decrease to a significant degree. Studies show that certain essential oils can deactivate viruses by inhibiting replication, protein production, and halting the fusion to cell walls on a host cell. They also may interrupt enzymatic reactions and processes needed to grow and spread in the body, although internal use would be needed for that (do not randomly swallow or take essential oils without guidance please).

Essential oils may be added to soaps, dishwasher liquid, and laundry to strengthen the pathogen and antiviral properties. Studies show that certain microorganisms can actually survive the laundry cycle and are not very susceptible to typical soaps and detergents due to building a resistance over many years. The molecular structure of essential oils is so vast and complex that building resistance is nearly impossible. Here is a list of several powerful  oils for viruses. Creating a mixture of alcohol, water, and essential oils (around 5-7%) in a spray bottle for objects, surfaces, devices, sniffing in a tissue or within cupped hands, using in a diffuser, mixing several drops in Epsom salt in baths, using topically with coconut oil are some of the many ways to incorporate these powerful compounds while we closely monitor where this situation goes.

1. Bay Laurel Oil

Bay laurel (Lauris nobilis) is one of the most ancient substances according to some sources, predating even the dinosaurs and mammalian life. It is one of the few plants to have survived such a vast period in this earth. Many ancient cultures regarded bay laurel as mystical and possessing strong medicinal power. Wearing a crown of bay laurel leaves was a practice that was reserved for the most noble and powerful people in certain cultures. This speaks to the respect and admiration it garnered for many years before it fell into obscurity. Clinically, bay laurel oil has experienced good success in testing against many different types of viruses and pathogens. Definitely one of the better antiviral, anti-microbial oils on the market.

2. Ravensara Oil

Ravensara essential oil is another one that hasn’t gone mainstream or be well know besides that of people in the field, but may very well be literally one of the top oils in the world for viruses. Preliminary research has shown that it may be effective against the shingles virus, mononucleosis, flu, herpes, viral enteritis, and many other strains. Studies conducted and confirmed in 2003 by several researchers from the Department of Microbiology and Zayed Complex for Herbal Research and Traditional Medicine. (1)

3. Bergamot Oil

Bergamot is a very pleasant smelling citrus fruit that may have powerful antiviral effects. One study showed that after just 10 minutes of vapor exposure (great for diffusing in the air), bergamot was effective against flu viruses. It may also be useful for shingles, chicken pox, herpes, and other viruses. (2) Another added bonus is that bergamot is known to be one of the better essential oils to help lower levels of stress, fear, and anxiety.

4. Niaouli, Tea Tree, and Eucalyptus Oil

These three essential oils are grouped together because of how closely related they are species wise. While there are still distinct differences in each oil, all three have good antiviral properties. Tea tree may have the most publish research and clinical success, but it doesn’t mean it’s superior to niaouli, which hasn’t had the type of funding as tea tree for research. Niaouli is very powerful and may actually be preferable in certain situations. Certain compounds in tea tree oil can be hazardous if used undiluted, although it is still very powerful for pathogens.

5. Thyme Oil

Thyme essential oil has always been a titan when it comes to destroying or inhibiting microorganisms and pathogens. While one essential oil cannot possibly destroy all infectious agents, thyme oil blends very well with so many other oils and adds to its power (especially along with cinnamon and clove). One study showed that thyme, tea tree, and eucalyptus oils (or can substitute with niaouli) reduced viral activity by 96%. Research has also shown that thyme may have activity against the Newcastle virus and herpes simplex virus 1 & 2. (3) Thyme oil was also found to be effective at controlling the spread of a virus that kills prawns. A 1% solution of thyme oil added to pellets consumed by prawns helped to prevent its progression despite being infected. While that may not help humans, it does demonstrate broad-spectrum antiviral properties. (4)

6. Cinnamon & Clove oil

Clove & cinnamon essential oils have some of the most powerful anti-microbial, anti-pathogenic properties of all the essential oils. These two oils consistently come out at the top of many studies for different species of bacteria, fungi, viruses, parasites, and more. They are grouped together because of the fantastic synergy they have when used together. A 2010 study found that a blend of clove, cinnamon, and orange essential oils reduced certain viral particles in vitro by at least 90 percent. (5) Further research has shown that clove oil may have strong antiviral properties against non-enveloped RNA and DNA viruses like adenovirus, poliovirus, coxsackievirus B1, HSV-1, and others. (6)  In one experimental test with several essential oils, only cinnamon inhibited a chosen virus for testing. (7)  A patent-pending cinnamon extract is currently being produced that’s touted to help HIV, Avian flu, herpes, Sendai virus, and many other viruses.  (8)

7. Lemon Balm oil

Lemon balm is known as one of the most potent antiviral substances around, especially as an essential oil concentrated extract. Genuine lemon balm (melissa officinalis) essential oil is very expensive though, which can hamper using it in doses that really make a difference. Even using a few drops in a spray or taking 1 single drop mixed in with coconut oil twice per day may help make a positive difference. Test-tube research has shown that lemon balm oil had potent effects against avian bird flu, herpes, HIV-1, enterovirus, and possibly other viruses. (9-12) There are many knockoffs are on the market posing as genuine lemon balm oil, it’s important to make sure the oil is real or it will not work.

PROTECTION BLEND

We carry a blend called Protection (Thieves blend) that contains several of the oils mentioned on this list. Within it are several very powerful oils such as thyme, cinnamon, clove, lemon, and eucalyptus. Adding in bay leaf, bergamot, and tea tree or niaouli (which we also carry) to this blend may increase its pathogen fighting power even more. This is an easy way to start utilizing the power of essential oils at a low cost. Together, the protection blend and others on this list will give you and your family broad-spectrum microbial fighting power to keep your space and objects clean. Studies show that objects such as faucets, door handles, sponges, keyboards, clothing, steering wheels, debit cards, phones, and many other items accumulate a massive amount of potentially harmful microorganisms that can make us sick.

There are a few other things worth mentioning when it comes to internal supplementation. There is quite a bit of evidence that certain supplements can help prevent viral replication in many strains and can possibly help lower the chances of contracting any given virus. Natural compounds such as Japanese honeysuckle tea (potent antiviral activity), lomatium root (specializes in viruses that attack the respiratory system), baicalin (potent antiviral effects with activity in the lungs), selenium (won’t cure viruses, but low selenium levels make it easier for viruses to take hold), black cumin seed oil, olive leaf extract with hydroxytyrasol, haritaki, lugol’s iodine (15-20mgs per day spread out in doses), purified, micronized clinoptilolite zeolite, and many others may be very helpful for inhibiting viral replication and make it tougher to take hold. They may also help in some way if already infected if active against this particular strain.

While there’s no guarantee with any natural or drug-based medicine, it may be the best option at the moment. Hospitals and the medical system have no real answer right now and may not for the foreseeable future. The track record of the medical system working with viruses and other infections isn’t great and has been outperformed many times by natural compounds. Right now, natural compounds like essential oils and the supplements mention may be the most feasible and powerful options.
