As research continues to evolve in the field of natural medicine, knowledge about the vast properties of vitamins, minerals, herbs, essential oils and other nutraceuticals continues to expand. Chronic pain and inflammation continue to be one of the most pervasive issues that people face on a regular basis. Whether from injuries, degeneration, inflammation, or any other cause, pain is something that we all feel at some point in our lives. Essential oils may be a hidden gem when it comes to pain relief. While they may not be able to replace internal supplements or medication, essential oils can add tremendous value to any pain-relieving regimen.
With regular topical use, essential oils may help to quell inflammation, lower the sensation of pain, destroy localized microorganisms that contribute to pain or degeneration, and even repair cells that may have incurred damage. The penetration of an essential oil depends on the carrier it’s used with. Emu oil, fractionated coconut oil, and almond oil are usually thought of as good penetrating based to dilute essential oils with. Here is a list of some of the most effective anti-inflammatory, pain-relieving essential oils.
Oregano oil has a long history of medicinal use in many different cultures and is often one of the first lines of defense against infections and pathogens. Unfortunately, it’s pain-relieving, anti-inflammatory properties aren’t well known or taken advantage of very often. One study with rats showed that the oil of oregano contains analgesic properties that may help lower the level of pain that is felt. (1) A more impressive study that was published in the publication Phytotherapy Research concluded that oregano had painkilling effects that were almost as effective as morphine, without any of the side effects! Oregano oil contains several natural anti-inflammatory and analgesic compounds that penetrate into the joints and possibly even the synovial fluid. This type of action may have potential in numerous types of injuries and pains.
Myrrh has a rich and celebrated history for its many medicinal and spiritual attributes. Myrrh was often used to ease pain or prevent the infection of wounds and sores. It was sometimes mixed with wine and used as a pain-relieving blend. This myrrh and wine combination was even said to have been offered to Jesus on the cross. Myrrh’s anecdotal properties have been validated preliminary research for helping to lower the intensity and sensation of pain. Studies also have shown that myrrh possesses anti-inflammatory effects. Vetiver & Ginger
These two oils are great at enhancing circulation and stagnancy of blood to help repair and facilitate healing. Vetiver is a rich and nourishing oil that stimulates circulation, helps with cellular repair, warms and soothes to help lower pain levels, is said to possess anti-inflammatory properties, and much more. Ginger is fantastic as a natural anti-inflammatory and circulation enhancer. Active compounds called gingerols have potent anti-inflammatory and healing properties. (3) These two are fantastic to add to any pain-relieving blend and will enhance the effects.
Lemongrass oil is a great addition to any topical pain-relieving topical. It’s been said to help with ligament, tendon, and soft tissue healing. Several compounds in the oil have shown to have anti-inflammatory properties. (4) A study that was done in 2017 on people with rheumatoid arthritis proved that topical use of lemongrass oil helped lower the level of pain that each subject experienced. Within the first week of treatment, improvements were already apparent. After the full trial of 30 days, very significant pain-relieving benefits were obvious in the group using the oil. (5)
Marjoram / Sweet Marjoram
Marjoram oil has a long and rich history of use throughout many different cultures for a plethora of afflictions. Marjoram oil is a powerful addition to any pain-relieving blend due to its ability to potentially relieve spasms, tightness, tension, aches, and pains. Marjoram appears to possess analgesic, anti-inflammatory properties, and anti-spasmodic properties. This makes it a great candidate for providing support to many different types of pain.
A study done on marjoram oil took several women that experienced severe cramping before or during their cycle and gave them marjoram oil diluted into a carrier oil for topical use. Regular massages in the abdomen, lower abdomen, lower back, and other areas helped to lower the amount of pain, spasms, and cramps that they experienced. The duration of the cramps also decreased. Another study on marjoram showed improvements on neck pain when used in a carrier oil as a massage. (6,7)
Copaiba is a thick, sap-like resin that is tapped and extracted from copaifera trees. It contains the highest level of beta-caryophyllene out of any essential oil or substance in the world. Beta-caryophyllene has shown to have powerful medicinal properties, even when used internally in small doses (oil must be pure). Copaiba not only engages the Cb1 & 2 cannabinoid receptors, but it also activates a host of other mechanisms in the body and brain that causes significant medicinal activity. Beta-caryophyllene has potent natural anti-inflammatory, pain-relieving properties as well. (8,9) It works even better when combined with other oils for topical use and acts to enhance the effects of other oils. Best if used in a 6-7% concentration, higher than certain other essential oils, which are better at a 2-3% rate in a blend.
Rosemary oil is a great synergist and enhancer of oil blends, similar to ginger, vetiver, and copaiba. Rosemary may help to enhance circulation, lower pain or inflammation, and anti-spasmodic properties. One study with rosemary essential oil took a group of people with knee pain from rheumatoid arthritis and gave them only 3 massages a week. The group receiving the massages showed less inflammation and knee pain after only two weeks. For truly therapeutic properties, using a topical massage 2 times a day is needed. Another study showed a 30% reduction in pain in stroke survivors with shoulder pain that used rosemary, lavender, and peppermint oil in a massage blend. (10)
There are many other oils such as birch bark (wintergreen), peppermint, turmeric, lavender, plai, and more that are also extremely helpful. A combination of internal supplements and external massages can often provide immense amounts of relief without the need for harsh, dangerous, potentially addictive medication that’s handed out like candy.
