Plant Description: Native to the Northern Hemisphere, including Europe, Scandinavia, Asia, and Canada, now growing wild from the Arctic to tropical Africa and the mountains of Central America. The oil is produced in various European countries, Canada, Russia and India. Juniper is an evergreen tree/shrub that grows to a height of 20-35 feet or more with whorls of narrow stiff needles; it bears small white or yellow flowers producing berries that turn from pale green or brown in their first year to purple/black with a blue waxy coating after 18 months. Cultivated trees are kept to a height of 6 feet for ease in harvesting the mature berries.
Oil Description: Clear to very pale yellow mobile oil having a clear, fresh, woody-sweet and pine needle-like aroma with warm balsamic undertones.
Historical/Traditional Uses: Juniper has been in use since the distant past: remains of their berries have been found in prehistoric dwelling sites near lakes in Switzerland; commonly used by the Greeks and Romans as a disinfectant; popular as a cure-all during the Middle Ages; Hildegard of Bingen recommended the crushed berries in a hot bath for respiratory infections. Current clinical studies have been conducted on Native Americans use of juniper for treating diabetes, as reported in Diabetes Care, June 2005.
