Clary Sage

Clary sage is a colorless to pale yellow or pale olive liquid with a strong but soft, warm, fruity-herbaceous, somewhat wine-like aroma, and a tea-, hay- or tobacco-like back note often described as being similar to the scent effect of ambergris. Clary Sage essential oil has earned great respect for its beneficial effect on the female reproductive system and one’s emotional state of mind. It is also highly regarded in perfumery for its excellent fixative qualities. For menstrual cramps add a few drops to a tsp of carrier oil and apply to abdomen. Cover with warm cloth.

Oil Description: Colorless to pale yellow or pale olive liquid with a strong but soft, warm, fruity-herbaceous, somewhat wine-like aroma, and a tea-, hay- or tobacco-like back note often described as being similar to the scent effect of ambergris.
Historical/Traditional Uses: Clary Sage has been used medicinally for at least two thousand years as noted in the writings of Theophrastus (4th century BCE), Dioscorides (1st century CE), and Pliny the Elder (1st century CE). In Nicholas Culpepers The Complete Herbal, published in 1653, the author recommends using a tea made from the seeds of Clary Sage to cleanse and remove foreign matter from the eyes, thus the herbs common name of Clear Eyes. Clary Sage was also used in Germany and England up to the 18th century to increase the euphoric effect of beer and wine; it is still used today for flavoring muscatel wine and tobacco.
Applications (Uses and Indications): In aromatherapy, Clary Sage is indicated for stress, muscular and nervous tension, headaches, menstrual and menopausal issues (bloating, cramps, depression, anxiety, hot flashes, regulation of menses, etc.), digestive complaints, impotency, and frigidity. It has the ability to calm bronchial spasms, counter mental fatigue, stimulate digestion, and encourage hair growth. Above all, it is most noted for its emotional and psychological attributes: creating a balance between relaxation and stimulation, uplifting mentally and emotionally while at the same time grounding and restoring clarity, as its name denotes. In perfumery, Clary Sage is a middle note and an excellent fixative that blends well with bergamot and other citrus oils, cardamom, cedarwood, cinnamon, citronella, clove, coriander, cypress, frankincense, geranium, jasmine, juniper, labdanum, lavender, pine, sandalwood, spikenard, tuberose, vetiver and yarrow.
Contraindications (Safety and Precautions): Clary Sage essential oil is non-toxic, non-sensitizing and non-irritating. Use with care during pregnancy. Do not use while drinking alcohol; do not use if taking medication containing iron. Do not use if there is an existing condition of breast cysts, uterine fibroids, or other estrogen-related disorders. Large amounts can cause headaches, dizziness, and stupor.
Standard Safety Precautions: Always dilute essential oils before using. Keep essential oils out of the eyes and mucous membranes; in case of contact, DO NOT use water, instead place a drop or two of vegetable oil on a tissue to gently wipe out of eye or off area of contact. In severe cases, seek professional help immediately. Keep out of the reach of children. In case of ingestion, call 911 immediately.
