Botanical Name: Citrus aurantifolia
Origin: Mexico
Part Used: Peels
Process: Steam Distillation

Plant Description: Native to Southeast Asia; cultivated in the Middle East, North Africa, the Caribbean, and the Mediterranean region in general. Commercially grown in India, Egypt, Mexico, Florida and California. Citrus aurantifolia plants are small, bushy subtropical trees that grow to a height of 16 feet, some quite thorny and others without thorns, with extremely fragrant pure white flowers that bloom from spring through fall. Fruits reach maturity in autumn through early winter having peels that are notably tarter and more fragrant than the common limes sold in grocery stores.
Oil Description: Pale yellow to water-white mobile liquid with a fresh, tangy, citrus scent. Its bright and lively aroma is more true to the aroma of fresh squeezed limes and has more complex nuances when compared to expeller pressed lime peel oil. Although citrus oils are prone to turning sour, careful storage will prolong the shelf life – in dark, tightly capped glass bottles stored in a dry, cool, dark place, with little or no air space above the surface of the oil (and preferably with an injection of nitrogen or other inert gas to replace the air).
Historical/Traditional Uses: (more to come)
Applications In aromatherapy, Lime essential oil is an excellent go-to oil for lifting the spirits and dispelling depression. It is indicated for cases of anorexia due to its stimulating and regulating effects on the appetite, and its astringent and toning action is useful for oily skin and scalp conditions. Its high concentrations of Vitamin C help defend against colds and coughs. In perfumery, Lime is considered a top note that blends well with angelica, bergamot and most other citrus oils, cedarwood, citronella, clary sage, coriander, geranium, lavandin, lavender, lemongrass, neroli, nutmeg, palmarosa, petitgrain, pine, rose, rosemary ct cineole, vanilla, violet leaf, and ylang ylang.
Contraindications (Safety and Precautions): Lime essential oil is non toxic; it may cause skin sensitization or irritation in some individuals. It is considered non-phototoxic due to the oil being distilled rather than pressed from the peels – however, we suggest using caution if skin is exposed to strong sunlight within the first 24 hours of application.
Standard Safety Precautions: Always dilute essential oils before using. Keep essential oils out of the eyes and mucous membranes; in case of contact, DO NOT use water, instead place a drop or two of vegetable oil on a tissue to gently wipe out of eye or off area of contact. In severe cases, seek professional help immediately. Keep out of the reach of children. In case of ingestion, call 911 immediately.
